Visionary Sister Duo Takes on The Restoration Industry

Women are making remarkable progress in industries where they’ve traditionally been underrepresented, and my sister Brooke and I are no exception. Last February, we took a bold step into the restoration and franchising sectors by investing in our first business together, DRYmedic Restoration Services of Lakewood Ranch, marking an exciting new chapter in our entrepreneurial journey.

Growing up with a sister you are given the ability to navigate life with an automatic teammate by your side, and for the two of us, that partnership guided us through many phases and challenges. A few years back, we both found ourselves searching for more flexibility and a greater purpose in our careers, while also juggling being working mothers. Together, we had a vision of redefining our careers and finding success through entrepreneurship that was made possible through our shared passion and collaboration.

It had been our goal to open our own business from a young age. Growing up, our entrepreneurial dad instilled a passion for leadership and innovation in us from a young age, teaching us to dream big and make an impact on our communities. It’s a dream that sometimes feels unrealistic, but for us, we knew it was something we could achieve if we put our minds to it.

In this way, we felt determined to find success in a business opportunity that was both beneficial to those around us and a good investment for the future. Through our research, it was clear that franchising was the best route for us to take, in order to have the support and security we needed to make the jump into entrepreneurship. With a franchise we learned we’d be able to hit the ground running with trained professionals and personalized tips. While we knew we were ready to invest in ourselves and a business, we were hesitant to go at it alone, making franchising appealing.

As we continued our research, the restoration industry resonated with us because we felt we could make a large impact on the community. As soon as we learned about DRYmedic Restoration Services, our vision of helping out our neighbors and providing a sense of security to the community quickly came to life.

Being in Southwest Florida, mold remediation and rapid response services are widely in demand. These are necessary services due to unpredictable weather conditions and hurricane seasons that have badly impacted the area over the past few years. Even today, these events continue to pose a risk, making restoration services essential in the region. Additionally, with the backing of a strong parent company like Authority Brands, we felt confident investing in DRYmedic Restoration Services.

We were also inspired to take on the challenge of entering a traditionally male-dominated industry and break down barriers. As mothers, both Brooke and I aim to pave the way for not only our own daughters, but all young girls looking to own their own business or enter a field that is historically run by men. We hope our story can inspire other women to take risks, break out of their comfort zones, and pursue opportunities in industries where they may not have previously considered themselves welcome. With the number of females in the restoration industry increasing to over 50% in recent years (according to a recent study from the Bureau of Labor Statistics), we couldn’t wait to make our mark after learning more.

Changing career paths and investing in a passion can be stressful, but together we continue to overcome any challenges that may come our way. Since we’ve opened our doors and entered our clients' homes, we’re excited to have accomplished so much already, including forming valuable relationships and becoming a trusted source for the community. We are proud to have taken the risk of entrepreneurship and achieved the flexibility, purpose, and freedom that we strived for. While it may not have been our first career, it is certainly the most fulfilling and we look forward to what the future holds for our business.
