Path makers of Change: Empowering Future Generations Through Inclusive Music Education

by Dr. Alice Hammel

Education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking barriers, and mentorship is the bridge that connects knowledge to transformation. As a lifelong educator, author, and advocate for inclusive music education, I have dedicated my career to ensuring that all students, regardless of ability, have access to the joy and empowerment that music brings.

My journey has been shaped by incredible mentors who saw potential in me, and guided me through challenges. Now, as an educator and mentor myself, I have the privilege of helping the next generation of music educators develop the skills and confidence needed to teach all students, including those with differences and disabilities.

Throughout my work at The University of Arkansas and as a clinician and in-residence scholar across the country, I have witnessed the power of inclusive education. Music is a powerful communication tool, yet traditional music instruction often excludes students who learn differently. My mission has been to change this narrative by equipping educators with the tools they need to create accessible and inclusive classrooms. In my books, including Universal Design for Learning in Music Education and Teaching Music to Students with Differences and Disabilities, I emphasize that every student deserves a music education that meets their individual needs. When teachers adapt their methods to embrace all learners, they empower students to find their voice and build confidence through music.

Mentorship has been a key component of my career. As the Past-President of the Virginia Music Educators Association, I have worked closely with aspiring educators to help them navigate the evolving landscape of music education. Through workshops, keynote presentations, and one-on-one guidance, I strive to provide the same level of encouragement and support that my mentors gave me. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work is seeing my former students become influential educators continuing the mission of inclusive music education. Mentorship is not just about offering good advice; it is about instilling a sense of confidence, purpose, and resilience in future leaders.

I hope to inspire and uplift others through education, and provide curriculum and guidance to ensure every student and teacher succeeds.

Over the course of my journey, I have found many different ways to mentor and influence those around me. Leading with empathy is essential, every learner has unique strengths and challenges, and by approaching teaching and education with understanding, we form safe spaces for growth. Being a lifelong learner is equally important, as education constantly changes, particularly in the areas of diversity and inclusion. Building solid relationships is at the heart of meaningful change; whether mentoring a student or a fellow educator, investing in people fosters lasting impact. Advocating for change is also crucial when we see gaps in resources or support, we must become the voices that push for inclusive policies and programs.

The impact of an educator extends beyond the classroom. It is seen in the confidence of a student who finally acknowledges their potential, in the teacher who discovers new ways to reach all learners, and in the community that benefits from a more diverse and inclusive educational experience. I am proud to be part of a movement that prioritizes accessibility, mentorship, and influential leadership. By seizing these values, we can pave the way for future generations to thrive.
